Friday Music Confessional: I’m a GLEEk!

glee-1.jpg

I have to admit it. I’m a GLEEk (a fan of the show GLEE on Fox).

Yes, it’s a show about high school Glee clubs.

Yes, I probably did make fun of those same kids back in High School.

Yes, I bought the first season on DVD for my wife for Christmas, but secretly wanted it myself. (Whoops! Hope she doesn’t read this…)

My first time my wife and I watched GLEE, we actually weren’t impressed. We were hearing great things about the show, and caught the second or third episode of Season 1, but was severely disappointed. In the episode, it had the Spanish teacher and Glee coach, Will Schuster starting some boy band with the other male teachers of the school. It didn’t have much of the students singing that episode, and I distinctly remember the “Bad Boy Teachers” singing Color Me Badd’s “I Wanna Sex You Up”… (horrible memory, please delete this from my brain).

It left such a bad impression that we held off for a couple of weeks, thinking our friends who told us this show was great were all insane. We gave it another chance when it returned from their mid-season break and loved it.

As a musician and singer, I appreciate good music in any form. The GLEE writers are taking already great songs, and performing them in fresh way that makes it impressive. Sure, they use the same formula for songs and highlighting certain singers (and they’ve also made fun of that on the show), but it works.

Love it? Hate it? Let me know in the comments below.

Friday Music Confessional… Cee Lo Green

Here’s an attempt to start up a new regular posting called the “Friday Music Confessional.”

cee_lo_green.jpg

I’ve heard this guy Cee Lo Green’s music for a while. After his song “Forget You” (the non-explict version of his song “F*#($* You”) was performed by Gweneth Paltrow on GLEE, it seemed to blow up everywhere. I don’t think I get through a day without hearing this song on the radio. Now he’s part of that show “The Voice” with some other talented music artists.

So… I have a confession to make. Though I’ve seen a video of Gnarles Barkley’s song “Crazy”, I didn’t realize that they were the same person, and thought “Gnarles Barkley” was a real person. I had no clue it was some duo, and thought, “Heh, Cee-Lo sounds a lot like that “Crazy” singer…

… Yes, I can be completely oblivious to the obvious.

Posts not showing up…

blah, for some reason, my posts don’t always show up. I knew I posted those last two entries, but they never came up…weird…

Anyways, just posting about Steve Fee’s CD again. He rocked the house at OneDay. On his CD he does a Jason Wade cover (If you don’t know who Jason Wade is, he’s the lead singer of Lifehouse =) ). The song is called Revolution Cry.

When passion takes on a purpose
And searching ones embrace the light
When skeptics find themselves down on their knees
You’ll know it’s here

When you hear a sound as loud as thunder
When you hear a cry that shakes the ground beneath you
When you hear a shout that shatters the darkness
You’ll know it’s here

When the lost find a name worth believing in
And the fallen get back on to their feet
When the broken start to dream again
And the sound of praise fills these streets
You’ll know it’s here

It’s the revolution
Can You feel it
Revolution cry
And I believe it

How long will we have to wait
How long will we stay silent
When will this weeping generation dance again
Oh God when will your truth be restored

When the lost find a name worth believing in
And the fallen get back on to their feet
When the broken start to dream again
And the sound of praise fills these streets
You’ll know it’s here

It’s the revolution
Can You feel it
Revolution cry
And I believe it
And I believe it…

On the Road Again….

Heh, well not really, the title just sounded cool and I hoped you would read it.

I love Steve’s CD. Go buy it now!! Click here to buy!. It’s just super. 11 songs, straight from Steve’s heart to God’s, (but songs we can all love and grab on to as well). I’m kinda debating on doing one of them this Sunday (that What Else Can I Do song).

This is week 2, of our 6 week series on The Purpose Driven Life. I’m leading worship along with the band, and the weeks focus is on Worship, so what better week to lead. I have a few songs in mind, and after meeting with Pastor Kevin today, I have a few more. I’m almost at a mix posistion to do two songs. One is that What Else Can I Do song by Steve Fee that I posted in my journal not too long ago. It’s a great song that talks about worship, and declares that there’s nothing else we can do but worship Him. The other song which is new, and I’m thinking about doing is one of Charlie Hall’s songs called “One Thing”. I’ll post the lyrics in the extended entry for ya’ll.

On a side note, OneDay03 is coming up fast. Stupidly, I registered twice. I can’t find my first registration email, so I thought I hadn’t registered, and registered again before the 2nd price-change. Now that it’s after April 18th, it can’t be refunded either, but I can have it transfered to a person. So if any one of you who reads my journal hasn’t registered for OneDay03 yet (full pass with camping), please let me know by emaling me ASAP!

Things are looking pretty good for our OneDay03 trip. There’s about 13 of us who are going to be camping together, and strangely, I’m like the middle man of the whole expedition (I know like 10 of the 13 people going, hah). Fun stuff. It’s kinda hard to coordinate everything though. If you’re interested in camping with us crazy asians, shoot me an email as well. Or post a comment, and join us in our yahoo group, The Road to OneDay03.

Ok, enough for tonight, time for sleep, and another long day tommorrow, oh, I may go to Dave & Busters! w00t w00t!

One Thing by Charlie Hall

Single minded, whole hearted
One thing I ask
Single minded, whole hearted
One thing I ask

That I may gaze upon Your beauty, oh Lord
That I may seek Your holy face
That I may know You in an intimate way
And follow after You all of my days
Follow after You all of my days

All of life, it comes down to just one thing
And that’s to know You, oh Jesus
And make You know…

(based on Psalm 27)

Steve Fee’s New CD, “Sacred Space” & 722 stuff

Just ordered Steve Fee’s CD “Sacred Space” this week. (It came out tuesday actually, ordered it tuesday as well). It hasn’t come yet though. Lots of great songs on it. Out of like 12 songs, I haven’t heard like 3 of them, and the rest of them I love, and would love to incorporate into my worship when I lead. I jammed with JD and Helen today after worship practice and played them one of Steve’s songs called “Captivate.” Beautiful song.

I still remember when Lisa and I first heard it and tried to figure out all the words. We had to listen to it like 4 times to get it all (it was kinda hard to figure it out). He’s done that song probably about 3 times now at 7:22 (with this week being the 3rd). Good stuff, I can’t wait for the CD. Unfortunately, I don’t think they’ll be any appearances by Candi Pearson on it, but there may be I guess. Ahhh, how I miss that girl and her great voice….

Oh, I also just saw on the 722 webcast that Anna LaPlaye is leaving 722 and moving back to California after 2 years. Crazy, didn’t know she was from Cali originally. Hopefully things will still run smoothly without her there. She was pretty much in charge of the day-to-day things at 722. Making calls, setting up different teams, organizing people to do things, etc. A real power-house for them. At the same time, this leaves a posistion open… haha, Randall in Atlanta? oh geez…that sounds crazy… but I am pretty crazy, and it does seem fun and an enlightening experience.
